5K WALK-A-THON for “Kids-to-Camp”

Pentecost Sunday, May 23, 2010

Saint John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Rochester NY held a 5K WALK-A-THON on Pentecost Sunday, May 23rd, to raise funds for scholarships to send “Kids-to-Camp” (Saint Andrew’s Camp, Jewell NY).

In all, 54 parishioners participated in the walk while 6 others provided support and encouragement by offering cold water and fresh fruit at the half-way point and refreshments at the end-point.  The mid-point of the walk found the participants on the grounds of Rochester’s historic Mount Hope Cemetery.  There, taking a moment for refreshments and a brief rest, Father Ken James Stavrevsky (parish rector) led all in the singing of “O Heavenly King ...” followed by prayers and the blessing of the graves of Father Cyril and Matushka Gretel Stavrevsky.

The fundraiser, which also included a pre-walk parish dinner featuring culinary delights from Ethiopia and Eretria, ended with an ice cream party for the walkers.

Contributions for the event totaled $1,725.00 and, with additional sponsorship donations expected to arrive soon and a parish breakfast planned for June 20th, the parish anticipates having about $2,500.00 available for scholarships to this summer’s camping program at Saint Andrew’s.

A good time was had by all, and the parish plans to repeat the even annually.
